Best Spyware

Best Spyware

There really is no such thing as one best spyware program for everyone. They best spyware program for you to use depends on several factors according to your personal preference. Also, it is advisable in many cases to use several different programs instead of just one program because the fact is that there is no single developer that manages to block out 100% of spyware 100% of the time. You may have two separate programs that you use and one of the programs may catch something that the other program missed and vis a versa. This article details some of the options that may be available as well as some things to consider in relation to how you intend to use the software in order to find the best spyware for your situation.

Generally, the first thing that a person will probably consider in trying to find the best spyware for their needs is the price. For home computers, there are several free programs to choose from as well as shareware and full retail versions. For business computers, some of the free versions actually do require that you purchase a subscription. Even if a person decides to buy a full version software package for home, it might be a good idea to use a free version of another developer for a secondary backup in order to provide the best spyware protection.

Consider what types of scans that the software performs. There are ADS scans, rootkit detections, customized scans, remove on reboot scans, memory, registry and drive scans. In addition, it may be helpful to have a program that provides a scan log or report. Also consider whether the software scans during system starts or if you have the option to choose the time of day or night for your scan to operate.

Does the software provide prevention and protection for memory processes? Check to see if the software protects against browser hijacking. ActiveX programs can be menacing. Also, it is helpful if the software warns you in the event that you are about to visit a site that is known for placing threats onto systems.

A very important thing to consider is the update capabilities of the software. Some programs require manual updates while some of the best spyware programs are automatically updated 24/7. Some programs take a middle of the road approach by performing scheduled updates.

It is always paramount when buying spyware or any kind of software to make sure that the software is compatible with your computer. Your computer will need to meet the requirements of the software in terms of supported operating systems, memory requirements, processor speeds etc

McAfee Spyware

McAfee Spyware

The McAfee spyware program McAfee Virus Scan has been a large competitor in the computer protection arena for quite some time. McAfee VirusScan is more for home computers whereas corporate computers are the target market for the VirusScan Enterprise program.

McAfee VirusScan is part of the McAfee VirusScan Plus package and also as part of the McAfee Internet Security Suite. The Mac computer users can use McAfee through the use of their Mac Os X program.

The McAfee Virus Scan Plus package contains programming for antivirus service, firewall protection and anti-spyware work. The McAfee spyware protection can be used to actively protect against incoming spyware as well as searching for resident spyware that is already on your computer. McAfee Virus Scan Plus performs detailed file scanning to look for various types of malware. The firewall protection includes both outbound and inbound protection.

With the exception of weekends, McAfee Virus Scan Plus used to provide daily updates to the definition database. It now appears that McAfee provides 24/7 updates as new problems are identified and solutions are developed to protect against them.

McAfee Virus Scan Plus includes pop-up reminders that occur daily and occur even when running full screen application and games. The interruptions may be limited by placing your software into McAfee’s Do Not Disturb mode so that you will not be interrupted while watching a movie for example.

McAfee Virus Scan Plus provides rootkit detection via its X-Ray functioning. Individual websites are rated for safety based on their estimated potential and tests for phishing scams, malware and spam. McAfee Virus Scan Plus also reviews computer activity for indications that the computer may have become infected with a virus or hacker software.

Norton Spyware

Norton Spyware

Norton Spyware, or more correctly Norton Antivirus, is one of the most widely known full retail antivirus and anti-spyware programs. The product is made by Symantec Corporation and is used to detect and remove spyware, adware and viruses along with additional potential threats.

Norton Spyware is a standalone software program that comes included in the Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works programs. For corporations, Norton Spyware is part of a program called Symantec Endpoint Protection and includes additional features that retail versions of the software do not include.

In addition to Norton Spyware searching for existing spyware that have been previously installed onto your computer, Norton Antivirus also detects and blocks viruses, worms, keyloggers and rootkits. In addition, Norton Antivirus scans email and instant messages and attempts to remove or block any attachments that are deemed to be infected. Norton Antivirus not only searches for spyware and viruses that have known signatures, it also attempts to identify threats by the way that a file operates and how it interacts with other components on your computer.

OEM versions of the software come with a 90 day license. Full retails versions come with a full year subscription. The subscription allows the user to receive any software patches as well as live updates of virus definitions. After the subscription has ended, the user must renew the subscription or buy a new copy of the software in order to continue to receive definition updates. Patches are still available for free even after a subscription has expired.

Symantec has been criticized in the past for a number of reasons. One of the concerns was that they were slow to provide updates to the virus definitions. In addition, the software was criticized for being cumbersome to install, for running slow and for taking an inordinate amount of system usage to operate. Symantec has also been criticized for being slow to repair bugs in the software. Symantec has also been criticized for allowing US law enforcement developed keyloggers/backdoors to bypass Norton’s detection. In 2005, Norton Antivirus was criticized as having a very slow response time for definition updates compared to its competitors. Norton was, at the time, providing updates weekly versus daily like many of its competitors. There were also previous complaints about Norton not uninstalling cleanly. Also, there have been some incompatibility issues between Norton Antivirus 2007 and other popular programs such as Spy Sweeper and Zone Alarm

Spyware Protection

Spyware Protection

The subject of spyware protection goes beyond simply downloading a program to search for and remove spyware from your computer or network. In addition to removing present spyware, your software needs to be regularly updated with new information about newly discovered spyware.

The system needs to be scanned regularly so as to identify spyware that may have been present on your system but was not detected in an earlier scan because the spyware or spyware repair method was not available at the time of the original scan. With a newly updated database of known threats and the actions needed to eliminate them, a new scan may uncover the previously missed spyware installation.

For thorough spyware protection, it is best to have an actively updated anti-spyware program that can quickly react to changes in the knowledge base of anti-spyware companies. Most of the full retail versions can update your software automatically as soon as threats become known.

If your system is being hijacked by a spyware component, it may be necessary to place your computer into lockdown for complete spyware protection. Users can often use their anti-spyware software to place their systems into lockdown. It may even become necessary to disconnect your computer from any networks or the internet in order to cut off the intruding connection to your hard drive.

A good way to provide additional spyware protection is to use a full version anti-spyware program as your main defense and then use a free program as a secondary backup. It is important to be sure to use a well known and trusted provider of a free anti-spyware program because there are several free downloads that disguise themselves as free anti-spyware programs but that are; in fact, spyware programs themselves.

Another way to protect yourself from spyware is to be careful as to who you allow to use your computer. You may have someone who is not familiar with your anti-spyware program log in on your computer, get a warning about a website from your anti-spyware software, then ignore the warning and visit the site anyway. The end result could be that spyware can make it onto your computer even though you have a properly functioning and fully updated anti-spyware program installed on your system

Remove Spyware

Remove Spyware

The first step to remove spyware is to identify a software program to use. More about this subject can be found in the three articles titled Best Spyware, Spyware Review and Free Spyware Detection.

As mentioned in the article Anti Spyware, it is best to prevent the spyware from getting on your computer in the first place; however, once it is there it needs to be found by doing a spyware search and then removed by the anti-spyware remove spyware functionality.

The removal of the spyware can be a tricky business indeed. First, the spyware may have altered a program file. To remove spyware from the program file may leave the attacked program inoperable or faulty. The spyware may have found a way to hide itself within files and folders so as to be difficult to detect. The spyware may have also made registry changes that may need to be identified and then corrected.

To make things even more complicated, some spyware programs are able to install themselves in many different places on your hard drive and, as soon as one location of the spyware is identified and corrected, another part of the spyware in another location may come back to the freshly cleaned area and reinstall its evil file again.

The ability of the anti-spyware software to accurately identify and remove spyware is directly related to the company that produces the software to identify and understand the inner workings of a particular spyware and then get the fix that is needed into the database of your anti-spyware program that is installed on your particular computer or network configuration. Full version programs are generally capable of using their financial resources to be the first to identify, understand and fight a newly created type of spyware.

In order to thoroughly remove spyware, anti-spyware programs have developed “file shredder” modules for the purpose of thoroughly and completely destroying spyware after it has been identified for removal. With the file shredder capabilities of newer software programs, you do not have to worry as much about an identified spyware being able to function after removal as a result of it not being fully destroyed.

Anti Spyware

Anti Spyware

This article focuses on the proactive tasks of anti spyware of identifying incoming threats to your computer before they have a chance to reside on your hard drive. Although spyware searches are important for eliminating malicious software that has already made it to your computer, it is best if you can prevent them from getting there in the first place.

A good anti spyware program will review all activity occurring on your computer whether it is activity occurring internally on your hard drive such as one program activating another, or activity occurring between your computer and the internet such as program downloads or file installations.

Anti Spyware Program

The anti spyware program needs to be updated via on-line updates so that the program knows about new threats as soon as they are identified by the company that made your anti spyware software. Full retail companies are generally the very first to know about, identify and find a solution for threats. Due to their deep pockets, they are able to maintain a staff 24 hours a day to keep your software on the cutting edge of threat protection. Once a threat is identified, your software can be automatically updated so that your computer is automatically protected.

In addition to anti-spyware blocking, search and removal capabilities; many software programs come with many useful computer protection functions combined into one package. One of the most important add-ons again is the ability to automatically update your anti-spyware database with the most recent threat updates. Some programs also include software feature updates and version upgrades as part of the automated update package.

Some programs help you to avoid internet danger by identifying sites that are known to be a source of spyware. The program can then inform you that the site would be best left alone. Additional site specific features of some programs include the ability to block sites that are known to contain offensive material. The meaning of “offensive material” can be determined by you by means of a list of types of websites for which you then choose whether to block that particular type of content or not.

Many other included functions of the program may include anti-virus protection, anti-hacker protection, PC maintenance, identity theft protection, spam protection, online scam protection, junk mail blockers, automatic file backup of important user files, IM and e-mail scanning.

Spyware Search

Spyware Search

A spyware search is the process that anti-spyware programs go through to search your computer for problems so as to eliminate them. The process of searching for spyware is where a search is done to identify spyware that has already made it only your computer vs. spyware blocking that prevents spyware from getting on your computer in the first place.

All of the reputable spyware programs do detailed searches on your computer for spyware. Some of the introductory programs may simply do a search for spyware for free and then ask you to purchase the software in order to eliminate the spyware that was located. This article assumes that you already have a program that is enabled to not only do a spyware search but to eliminate it as well.

A spyware search is a detailed and lengthy process that can take from several minutes to several hours depending on the amount of data that is being searched.

Spyware Problems

Spyware problems can be costly. Sometimes a computer gets so infected that it becomes necessary to back up the user data and fully reinstall the operating system. Because of the lengthy scans that may be required, most spyware allows you to schedule the scans to occur at regular times that you select for which you are not normally on the computer. This way, the scan can occur while you are normally away from your computer. You can usually choose how often you want to scan such as daily, weekly or monthly.

The programs scan installed programs, the windows registry and any operating system files. Once threats are identified, the software can usually ask you what you want to keep, what you want to destroy and may even give additional information about the threat to help you to make an educated decision regarding how to treat the threat.

Since the software is searching for threats based upon a database of known threats, it is important to keep the database updated so that spyware that has been recently identified by the software companies can also be searched for on your computer. The database of threats for which your software searches can be updated by your software update feature. Most of the full retail versions keep your database of known threats updated frequently and automatically

Free Spyware

Free Spyware

This article goes a little deeper into free spyware and makes comparisons between free spyware, shareware and full priced programs. The term “free spyware” actually refers to free anti-spyware since spyware is a term often used in place of anti-spyware because it is shorter and easier to say even though the terms technically mean the exact opposite of each other.

Free spyware is simply that: free. Although many thousands of man hours go into designing and promoting the free spyware, the developers do actually give the software away absolutely free. The developers usually ask for donations but they are not required. Sometimes, the software does not even require registration. It is even possible in some cases to get a “money back guarantee” on your donation.

Many of the free spyware programs are better classified as freeware which is usually available as proprietary software. This way, the developers can contribute to society by creating the program and the developers maintain control of the source code. This way, the developers maintain control of the software’s development and future profit potential.

Shareware

Shareware is a little more complicated. Shareware is where the user gets to test the software for free. The shareware may be a fully loaded version that the user uses for a limited trial period and then the user has to buy the software to continue its use. Shareware may also come in the form of software that does not have an expiration date but may be a stripped-down version for which a fee would need to be paid to upgrade the software to its full potential.

Shareware and freeware software are both forms of copyrighted software and is not to be confused with public domain software which is software that is not copyrighted and is completely free to use. Free/open source software is a unique type of software that actually allows the users to alter the code and develop their own versions and improvements.

Free Anti Spyware

If free anti-spyware is chosen, it is best to go with an established brand so that you have a better chance of having a program that is going to be useable and updateable in the future. The internet is strewn with freeware and shareware programs that were created, distributed and then no longer maintained or updated.

For a price, you can go with full retail versions of spyware. A major advantage of full retail versions vs. free spyware is that the companies developing the programs have the financial resources to constantly monitor the internet for new threats and quickly identify the threat, create a fix and then immediately update your computer spyware program via live feed. For those who have the money to spend to protect important data, full retail versions with live feeds are the way to go.

Spyware

Spyware

The first article assumed that you already had at least a vague idea of spyware and the potential that it has to wreck havoc on your computer. This article goes into an explanation of spyware so that you can understand just what spyware is all about.

Spyware is a file or program that is “secretly” placed on your computer, usually while surfing the internet, which is used by others to monitor or even control your computer without your knowledge. The spyware may be used to steal your private information such as credit card and bank account numbers, along with passwords and other information that a criminal could use to steal your identity. Other spyware may be used to record the websites that you go to so that your buying habits are known.

Spyware could be used to access illegal sites so that the criminal does not go to prison, you do. Spyware may change settings and wreck havoc with other programs. A large amount of spyware on your computer my cause it to run sluggish. The major target of spyware has been Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer because of their wide popularity. What is particularly dangerous is the fact that Internet Explorer and Microsoft Windows work
together and share information, allowing smart spyware to infiltrate Microsoft Windows.

Naive developers of the past assumed that ActiveX components would be friendly. Spyware writers exploited this weakness in Internet Explorer and spyware spread massively. A particularly interesting, albeit frightening, ability of spyware is that the spyware can install itself into the Windows Registry in various places. If one location of the spyware is found and destroyed, pieces of the spyware in other locations on the registry can recognize the part that has been destroyed and then reinstall itself into that location.

Spyware has been used to communicate with adware (pop-ups etc.) that then advertise products to you on your computer based on your buying habits in the past that spyware has identified. Some adware and spyware combinations are intentionally installed by users in certain cases and then the spyware is deleted by anti-spyware when the scan is run
