Norton Spyware
Norton Spyware, or more correctly Norton Antivirus, is one of the most widely known full retail antivirus and anti-spyware programs. The product is made by Symantec Corporation and is used to detect and remove spyware, adware and viruses along with additional potential threats.
Norton Spyware is a standalone software program that comes included in the Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works programs. For corporations, Norton Spyware is part of a program called Symantec Endpoint Protection and includes additional features that retail versions of the software do not include.
In addition to Norton Spyware searching for existing spyware that have been previously installed onto your computer, Norton Antivirus also detects and blocks viruses, worms, keyloggers and rootkits. In addition, Norton Antivirus scans email and instant messages and attempts to remove or block any attachments that are deemed to be infected. Norton Antivirus not only searches for spyware and viruses that have known signatures, it also attempts to identify threats by the way that a file operates and how it interacts with other components on your computer.
OEM versions of the software come with a 90 day license. Full retails versions come with a full year subscription. The subscription allows the user to receive any software patches as well as live updates of virus definitions. After the subscription has ended, the user must renew the subscription or buy a new copy of the software in order to continue to receive definition updates. Patches are still available for free even after a subscription has expired.
Symantec has been criticized in the past for a number of reasons. One of the concerns was that they were slow to provide updates to the virus definitions. In addition, the software was criticized for being cumbersome to install, for running slow and for taking an inordinate amount of system usage to operate. Symantec has also been criticized for being slow to repair bugs in the software. Symantec has also been criticized for allowing US law enforcement developed keyloggers/backdoors to bypass Norton’s detection. In 2005, Norton Antivirus was criticized as having a very slow response time for definition updates compared to its competitors. Norton was, at the time, providing updates weekly versus daily like many of its competitors. There were also previous complaints about Norton not uninstalling cleanly. Also, there have been some incompatibility issues between Norton Antivirus 2007 and other popular programs such as Spy Sweeper and Zone Alarm
